The pine marten is a medium-sized predator and belongs to the family of mustelids. It is an excellent climber but prefers to live at ground level.

The pine marten has been hunted for a long time for its fine fur. However, it has been more a matter of trapping than hunting, as so-called log traps have been used.

During the Middle Ages and the 1500s, marten skins were a commodity that brought significant export income. The fine hair of the marten is also used in the art of painting for the manufacture of watercolor brushes. The pine marten is found throughout Sweden except on Gotland.
