Squirrel

The squirrel is an arboreal rodent. In old folklore, it was believed that one could get epilepsy by eating its meat. It was also believed that dizziness could be cured by eating dried squirrel brain.
During the Middle Ages, squirrel skins were an important export item. Even in the 1930s, hundreds of thousands of animals were killed annually. It was not the fox-red summer fur that was in demand but the dense, beautiful winter fur, the so-called ”gray fur,” which was used for exclusive clothing. Hunting was carried out in many places with bows or crossbows well into the 1800s. To avoid damaging the fur, so-called squirrel arrows with a blunt end were used.
