Wolffish

Havskatt insamlad i Bohuslän 1872.
Photographer: Anna Panser

Wolffish enjoy deep waters and can be found living at approximately 400 meters depth. Its diet consists of sea animals living at the bottom of the sea, such as mussels, shellfish, sea urchins, starfish, crabs and crayfish. The sharp teeth of the wolffish are very helpful when tearing mussels from their shell.

Wolffish can be found in the North Sea and it prefers water around freezing point up to 14 degrees Celsius. It can become 130 centimetres long and weigh up to 22 kilograms. A wolffish’s average length of life is approximately 22 years. The species is red listed in Sweden but not internationally.

The specimen seen in the exhibition was collected in Bohuslän on February 1st 1872, by the well-known taxidermist Gustaf Kolthoff.
