Everyday Life and Celebrations

Everyday life could be tiring and monotonous and the festivities that broke it off were long-awaited. The changes of nature and life and festivals were celebrated just as much as church holidays and often the community celebrated together. In a trading town like Brätte with markets, travelers and merchants from near and far, it could still be eventful. In connection with large markets, many also took the opportunity to party, which sometimes led to drunkenness, fights and legal consequences.

The houses were cramped and dark and large celebrations such as weddings were often celebrated outdoors, during the summer. Music, singing and dancing were present at all types of celebrations and Brätte had its own musicians. Both adults and children played games and board games – several game pieces have been found in Brätte.
