Sources to Trust?
How can we know anything about a city that has disappeared and about the lives that were lived there? What are our sources of knowledge and where do we find them? Do we interpret them correctly? How reliable and representative are they?
There are two types of sources about Brätte: the archaeological ones with objects and remains in the ground and the historical written documents, such as court records, letters and maps. The sources are often limited. Only a fraction of the objects that were found have been preserved and found. Much is lost due to the properties of the ground and later interventions. The written sources are valuable but do not give the whole picture; who wrote the texts and why, who and what contexts do they deal with? A more accurate picture requires the addition of other sources and comparative research.
