The Invisible Children

Pieter Bruegels målning med barns olika lekar.

Some people or groups of people are more invisible than others in the archaeological and historical material. Children are one such group. They have rarely written documents or held positions where they have left a clear mark and if they are mentioned, they are usually anonymous or of secondary importance. But children were a present and distinguishable group and childhood was often shown special consideration. In the archaeological material we sometimes encounter children through objects used by or worn by them – like toys or the small shoe sole here in the exhibition. Paintings and other illustrations occasionally depict children in different situations. From Brätte we only know the names of a couple of children. Hear about them on the screen!
