The Foundation of a City
Throughout history, water was something that connected people, as goods were mainly transported by sea, lakes and waterways. The southern tip of Lake Vänern therefore became a collection point for goods early on. The freight ships, barges, could not sail further south due to the falls in the Göta River. Therefore, the goods had to be reloaded here to be pulled by horses along the so-called Edsvägen.
At this place, called Vassända, merchants and rural people gathered annually for the market – the Morsmässo market in September – from the early 16th century. Piers were built and a tavern opened for travelers. With the export of iron and wood products, Vassända's importance increased, and in 1544 Gustav Vasa proposed building a city with a castle here.
