Vänersborg is Founded

Vänersborgs sigill.

After the Crown redeemed Huvudnäs farm, land and forest began to be cleared in the summer of 1641 to prepare for the new city of Vänersborg. In the autumn of the same year, fortification officer Olof Hansson Örnehufvud was on site and made a plan for the city's streets, neighborhoods and strong military fortifications. With these fortifications, Vänersborg was to constitute a strong defense against Danish attacks into Västergötland.

In 1642, the new plots were marked out and by summer the following year the first Brätte residents were able to move their houses to the new city. On February 1, 1644, Vänersborg's city privileges were issued by the Swedish guardian government and in 1646 the privileges were renewed by Queen Christina, who had then come of age.
