Traces in the Ground
In the 1910s, Brätte began to be investigated archaeologically and in 1943 a major excavation was carried out. The paved streets, courtyards, hearth foundations and wells that were excavated at that time were left behind and are still partially visible. A survey in 2018 showed, among other things, stone and wooden sills and clay floors for houses, but these are not visible today. In 2024, a ground-penetrating radar survey was carried out in parts of the area on behalf of the museum. This showed accumulations of stone that indicate settlements even outside the already excavated areas.
An archaeological excavation means that the physical remains on site are documented but at the same time destroyed. Excavation and conservation are also costly. Therefore, excavations that are not necessary are rarely carried out these days.
