After 300 Years...
In preparation for the celebration of Vänersborg's 300th anniversary in 1944, excavations were carried out at Brätte the previous year. The excavations were led by archaeologist Erik Lundberg, who was assisted by a number of conscripts. A wealth of finds were brought to Vänersborg Museum. During these excavations, large areas were uncovered where streets, house foundations, cellars and wells came to light. Brätte was referred to as the Pompeii of Västergötland.
During the 1950s and 1960s, amateur researcher Acke Ek collected loose finds in fields around Brätte, finds that were given to the museum. In 2018, an archaeological survey was carried out in the area towards the water, where traces of buildings and finds of mainly ceramics emerged. In the autumn of 2024, a georadar survey was carried out at the site in an attempt to determine the extent of the settlement.
